Fido

UI/UX personal project for Academy XI

By Jeren Tan

We all love their pets like family.

because they are family,

(what do we know about the user)

With the Fido app,
it allows you to:

• Easily access to pet health and vaccination records.

• Seamless appointment scheduling for vets and grooming. (No more phone tag!)

• Push notifications for medication reminders.

Research and motivation

Research was conducted through online surveys targeting various pet related Facebook groups and Academy XI own cohort.  Targeted research was further conducted in the form of video interviews that delved deeper into their answers and motivations.

Initially the research focused on the motivation of why people have or have not registered their pets. However it was discovered there were wider motivations in that they needed help managing the lives and welfare of the pets overall.

Owners loved having pets, but were either time poor and less motivated to have their pets registered when they had to spend time managing other factors of their pets life. (boarding, medical, medication, appointments, grooming)  ie. registration was low on the priority.

Thus this project shifted scope to create a tool that would help pet owners spend less time managing their pet affairs and more time enjoying time with their pets.

Research reveal pet owners desired the following tools to help them enjoy their pets further.

  • Pet profiles (personalized details, photos, breed info).

  • Health management (vaccination records, vet history).

  • Appointment booking for vet and grooming services.

  • Medication reminders with push notifications.

  • Recreation options via maps and lists of pet-friendly spots.

  • Comprehensive, user-friendly, and tailored for pet owners.

What Is the Final Design Solution and Why?

What Challenges Did We Experience and How Did We Overcome Them?

Challenge 1: Balancing feature richness with simplicity.

Solution: Prioritized frequently used features and kept the UI simple.  There were actually a lot of other features that were requested in the research, however they were deemed not needed for MVP

Challenge 2: Personalizing for multiple pets.

Solution: Taking inspiration from streaming platform apps and their ability to have different profiles, The solution was to have individual profiles with separate records and settings – because each pet deserves their own spotlight.

Challenge 3: Research and gathering data

Solution: This was actually the most difficult part of the project.  Research and and talking to people requires a certain social skill set from a social point of view.  This skill set is not my strongest as i prefer to observe and watch for behavior rather than proactively approach someone and ask about them.  However I pushed myself to overcome my weakness and was rewarded with insightful data that changed the course of this project.
